Welcome to Short Pump Reading & Math, specializing in individualized reading and math tutoring using a research-based, multi-sensory approach.
I offer Orton-Gillingham tutoring incorporating the Barton Reading & Spelling System with traditional Orton-Gillingham tutoring. This approach is explicit, systematic, direct, multi-sensory and research-based, designed to improve the reading, spelling and writing skills of children, teenagers, or adults. The Barton Reading & Spelling System is especially designed for people with learning disabilities or dyslexia, or anyone who has not enjoyed success with traditional approaches to reading instruction, including phonics and whole-word approaches. Instruction is given in the 5 essential areas that research has proven necessary for reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Math tutoring is also available using the Math-U-See program, a research-based, explicit, structured, systematic, and cumulative program using multi-sensory teaching techniques. Math-U-See provides a firm foundation in mathematics for students struggling with math and for students with special needs. All instruction is done in a positive environment using a multi-sensory approach that is individualized and research-based for proven results. Is your child struggling with reading?
Many students who struggle with reading are smart. They have a specific difference in the way their brain processes written language and need specialized instruction based on the way they learn. The Orton-Gillingham approach has been proven to work for thousands of students with dyslexia, even when other methods have failed. Based on the work of Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham, this individualized, multi-sensory approach is effective in teaching children and adults who have not been successful in other reading programs. Early intervention (ideally before age 11) yields the best results, although teenagers and adults definitely benefit greatly from this instruction. Don't delay -- reading difficulties are not outgrown and the earlier proper instruction is begun, the sooner you or your child will begin to benefit from improved reading, spelling and writing skills. Benefits of this program include increased self-confidence and self-esteem by giving students the skills and tools they need to be successful in learning how to read and comprehend. Yes, your child can learn to love reading! |
